Recently, an author expressed his confusion as to why there seems to be an abundance of smoke shops, whilst the number of smokers declines? It’s not clear where the author was getting his statistics, but the answer to his question is not a difficult one.
Most smoke shops these days focus on “glass” and drug paraphernalia. While I’m not offering an opinion in this regard, I will suggest that today’s smart tobacconist realizes the benefit of branching out.
Cigarette or cigar-only shops attract a niche market. Stores that offer cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, hookahs, glass, and more are able to broaden their customer base, and ultimately survive in the current anti-smoking atmosphere.
