As the enforcement date nears for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations that threaten to cripple the cigar industry, some tobacco enthusiasts refuse to take their licks and be silent.
The three major lobbying groups that represent the cigar and pipe industries have filed a joint lawsuit against the FDA. The suit — filed by the Cigar Association of America, International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers (IPCPR), and Cigar Rights of America (CRA) — alleges the ruling “violates numerous federal statutes, as well as the federal rule-making process.”
Up in Smoke?
Strict rules recently enacted by the FDA include quarterly user fees, pre-market approval for new products, and stringent packaging/warning label guidelines. Industry leaders say the rules will threaten their bottom lines, and that any extra costs associated with the new measure will likely be passed on to consumers.
Meanwhile, the Tobacconists’ Association of America has contributed $50,000 to fight the new regulations.
