The bad news for California tobacco enthusiasts is that your smoking taxes are going up. Way up. The state’s Proposition 56 passed with more than 62 percent of the vote. It means cigar taxes there will soon increase by a staggering 153 percent. Insert shocked/angry/confused emoji here.
The good news is that similar measures were struck down in three other states: Colorado, Missouri, and North Dakota. California’s new tobacco tax will take effect July 2017.
