European War on Tobacco Alive and Well

Smokers in France will soon have fewer options, thanks to an inane new law that prohibits cigar brands with names that “connote an idea of social standing, good life, or qualities like masculinity or elegance.” French tobacconists will have two years to sell or remove the ‘illegal’ items from shelves. Earlier, the Ministry of Health decreed cigarettes must be sold in plain packaging.

The hypocritical lawmakers in France — a country where wine flows freely and is oft celebrated as an enrichment of daily life — need only take a passing glance in the mirror to realize their thinly-veiled political pandering is outright disgusting.
