The man behind the now infamous Avo brand passed away Friday at his home in Orlando, Florida.
Avo Uvezian began his professional career as a musician. In 1945, he founded the musical group the Libyan Boys (Uvezian was born in Lebanon), and later landed a gig as the traveling pianist for Shah Reza Pahlavi – then ruler of Iran.
On his suggestion (the Shah also paid for the trip), Uvezian moved to the United States, where he enrolled at the Juilliard School of Dance, Drama, and Music. Later, he caught the cigar bug, and the rest – as they say – is history.
When asked his secret for longevity, Uvezian famously remarked: “Every time you smoke cigars, you have given yourself another day of life.”
Uvezian leaves behind a wife, three sons, and daughter. He was 91.
